Low Income Heating Energy Assistance

NMCAA offers two energy programs to assist lower income households this fall and winter seasons.  The maximum assistance available per household ($600) remains the same as in recent years.

The Energy Assistance Program ("EA") began October 1 and continues to be available to those who have not previously applied.  No disconnect notice from the utility company is required for EA.  However, households must meet the income guidelines shown below.  Once an approved application is filed, a one-time payment will be applied to the applicant's account within approximately 30-40 days of application date.  The EA program ends on March 31, 2008.

The payment amount is determined by a State schedule based on type of fuel.  This energy payment will not count against a household's $600 maximum eligibility in the winter crisis program, "ECIP".  An explanation of ECIP follows.

The Energy Crisis Intervention Program ("ECIP") is designed to assist households whose high energy bills have resulted in receiving a disconnection notice from the utility company or for whom propane delivery is only available on a Collect on Delivery basis.  This winter energy help program does have a service maximum of $600 total assistance for the winter heating period of November 1, 2007 through May 31, 2008.  This maximum per household is established by the State.  This $600 is not set aside for a particular household and is available only if crisis funds remain at the time of application.

Contact any NMCAA service center (Outreach or Head Start center) to learn more about eligibility and about where and how to apply.  Winter crisis funds will be available until May 31, 2008 or until winter funds are exhausted, whichever occurs first.

Check this guide to determine whether you are income eligible for both Energy Assistance and Energy Crisis Intervention Program funding.
